Staircase House is a Grade II listed medieval town house, which is located in the Market Place. Widely regarded as the oldest secular building in Stockport, Staircase House is thought to date from around 1460. Over the years, the house had fallen into disrepair and following two devastating fires in 1989 and 1995, it faced a bleak future. However, funds were raised and a massive restoration plan was undertaken. Work was finished in 2004 and the museum opened to the public a year later. A beautiful building, it’s now also a great museum with interesting artefacts and displays that offer a unique look at old Stockport.
Visiting Staircase House is a must; it’s rare to find such a historic gem in the middle of a relatively modern town centre.
